Opera Club’s first Alumni
Interaction Session of the season kick-started on 27-Feb-2010, with Mr. Rohit
Deshmukh, Supply Chain Manager at Marico Ltd. sharing his insights and
experiences with the club members.
Mr. Rohit Deshmukh passed out
from SJMSOM, IIT Bombay in the year 2007. He was also the Placement
Co-ordinator for the batch of 2007. Mr. Rohit had previously worked in the
capacity of Business Applications Manager at Marico where he interfaced with
the Supply Chain Team to leverage IT Systems for efficient planning and
execution. Presently, as the Supply Chain Manager he is indulged in the area of
Demand Planning for Marico Industries.Mr. Rohit highly praised Marico’s work
culture and development plan wherein employees have the opportunity to garner
cross-functional expertise. He also talked about Marico offering International
exposure in upcoming markets of the Middle-East, South Africa, and Bangladesh
amongst others. He stated that Marico in particular gives strong importance to
the employees being “cultural-fits” in the organization. Talking about the FMCG
sector, he laid stress on the fact that a lot of Operations and SCM Managers
are making it to the CXO level consistently.
An MBA & APICS-CPIM certified
professional with good understanding of Supply Chain fundamentals including
demand/supply planning & inventory management, Mr. Deshmukh said that these
certifications along with the electives offered on campus allowed him to have a
good functional knowledge of Operations and SCM. Having done his summer
internship at ICI-Uniqema in procurement, he said that internship in the
requisite field allows you to get a hang of what suits you best.
Mr. Deshmukh suggested that apart
from internships, electives and core-courses, one must make an attempt to
develop an understanding of the peculiarities involved within the respective industries.
This keeps one updated on the specifics involved with the upcoming career
opportunities. Talking about the performance metrics for a typical
Operations/SCM Manager, Mr. Rohit said that it includes a number of factors
like Delivering on Stock, Forecasting Accuracy, Goal Checking and
Value-addition through development work, to name a few.
The entire session was more like
an informal interaction where the club members cashed on the opportunity of
clearing all specific doubts they had over SCM/Operations as a career. Club
President Madhavan co-ordinated the session while M. Padmanabhan and Yash
Khemka did their bit for Speaker Engagement and Logistics respectively.
Club Opera extends its gratitude
to Mr. Deshmukh for taking time out of his busy schedule and spending quality
time with us this Saturday evening.
Watch out for more such sessions
in the upcoming future!
