The first session of the Opera Club for SOM 13 batch on 21st August, 2011 kicked off with the seniors discussing the agenda planned for the day. The stage was then taken over by some of the students of SOM 13 batch who had put in their meticulous effort and prepared a presentation on ‘Logistics and the Indian Story’. The presentation was highly informative giving an overview of the current scenario of Indian Logistics. The discussion then moved on to the latest trends of 3PL and 4PL logistics providers. The videos, in between the discussion, helped in capturing the rapt attention of the audience and made the presentation more interesting. Finally they explained some interesting concepts like GST, Golden Eye Distribution Model, Project Shakti and Cross Docking. Following this, SOM 13 students asked certain queries which the seniors too helped in clarifying. Overall, the presentation was quite factual and well received by both SOM 13 and the senior members of the Opera Club.
The next part of this session was presented by the Opera Club head. He gave a deep and insightful presentation on the basics of supply chain and the various job opportunities in the SCM industry. A video on Dell’s Supply Chain model was also shared which helped in understanding how the Supply Chain works. He also explained the generic organization structure in any FMCG company and the relationship between Supply Chain Management and Operations. The former is actually a subset of the latter which cleared the confusions regarding both terms. He then listed out some of the most- sought for Operations related companies like Proctor & Gamble, Cadbury, and Johnson & Johnson etc. He ended the presentation by sharing with us job profiles of a few SJMSOM alumni in the field of SCM, which was clearly motivating for all the SOM13 students. We clarified our queries after the presentation.
The final part of the session was the Summer Interview experience sharing by the SOM12 seniors. Each of them first mentioned the companies in which they had done their summers and then began to elaborate on their experiences. The seniors present had done their summers on some of the best Operations companies like Proctor & Gamble, Kraft, Colgate and Cummins. They elaborated on how to prepare for the companies and how they had faced their interviews. This was a valuable session for most of the SOM 13 students and we realized which areas we need to concentrate on. After asking for feedback about the session, the first session came to an end.
