It’s been five months since I stepped into Shailesh J.Mehta School Of Management. Looking back, it’s been quite an eventful period of life. I may even go to the extent of using the much clichéd phrase ‘Life never was the same’ from July 2012. I have my reasons to say so and I thought I would share my experience in SJMSOM for the past five months.
SJMSOM was one of my dream colleges ever since I visited the campus for the Group Discussion/Personal Interview. Shailesh J.Mehta School of Management is ideally located within one of the best campuses of the country- IIT Bombay. Now when I mean the best campus, I am not bluffing. Settled amidst sprawling lawns and exotic landscapes, SJMSOM enjoys a wonderful aura which few B-Schools have an opportunity to. After the campus, one other striking thing which I need to mention is the fact that when you join SJMSOM, you are officially a student of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. A dream come true for many of us!
Moving on to my experience, my life at SJMSOM began on July 14th with the induction programme. After a very hectic initial first week, we got the opportunity to settle down. With tight deadlines, lengthy lectures, huge assignments, induction activities we were working with 100% utilization those days! After a few days, we had a fresher party organized by the seniors. It was a much needed break and it delivered the promised fun and frolic. We got to know most of the seniors during the party.
Talking about acads, the term mostly had introductory courses in management like marketing, accounting, economics etc. Of all the subjects, marketing deserves a special mention. It was easily one of the best courses I have attended in my academic career. Thanks to a lively teacher and many hands-on assignments, I will never forget my marketing basics. We had several assignments like taking surveys outside the campus, making and marketing a product etc. The day we made eye masks and sold them on the streets of Hiranandhani, Powai is a day to remember.
Before we could open and close our eyes, the first term examinations were standing tall before us. We managed to sail through the storm by burning the midnight oil for some days! Adapting to the MBA method of learning was challenging yet not impossible. The second term began immediately without any gap and we had our college B School Festival Avenues lined up. We had an important role in most of the events, assisting our seniors and learning from them so that we could organize Avenues 2012.
I realized soon that SJMSOM comes up with events almost every week and after Avenues we had Continuums – the rolling seminar series. We had continuums on the main streams of management- finance, marketing, operations and systems. Several high profile speakers from top notch companies shared their insights. The second term got over faster than the first and my first semester in SJMSOM came to an end. I look forward to more interesting events in my life in SJMSOM for the next two years.
