Rajeeev Bhadauria was present at SOM on 14th april to talk on the topic 'The challenges for Busnesses in the post Lehman world'. He started with an interactive session on the reasons for the Lehman brothers’ crisis of 2008. He went back 10-12 years to understand the events that led to this crisis. The rapidly changing technology, such as the advent of the internet, and the fast pace of globalization had made people lose sight of the distinction between prime and sub-prime as they raced to take advantage of these opportunities.
The rate of obsolescence had become so high that people did not notice that the business drivers had changed by 2008. Post 2008, the new business driver has become change itself. The technological drivers would be those that help us tackle the change such as web 2.0 and business performance platforms. The theories that worked pre 2008, such as motivation and linear extrapolation are now being replaced by theories of paradigm shift.
He reiterated that the golden rule is that there is no golden rule. The competencies required to face this new world of a dynamic equilibrium would be ones like design thinking. His talk was peppered with interesting anecdotes which involved Galileo, Swiss watch makers and many others.
He then opened the floor to questions which prompted another round of discussions of enforcing this change in the workplace.
